My name is Curt Brown. I'm a lobsterman and a marine biologist at Ready Seafood up here in Maine.

2
00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:14.000 line:0
Today we're going to talk to you a little bit about an important research project that we're working on

3
00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:16.000 line:0
with both the University of Maine and Red Lobster

4
00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:22.000 line:0
to improve our understanding of the early life stages of the lobster life cycle.

5
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:26.000 line:0
When a lobster hatches from an egg it actually spends the first month of its life

6
00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:31.000 line:0
at the surface of the ocean before settling down to the bottom for the rest of its life.

7
00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:36.000 line:0
These collectors right here were designed as part of this research project

8
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:39.000 line:0
to provide habitat for those baby lobsters.

9
00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:43.000 line:0
We set these collectors out all up and down the coast of Maine.

10
00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:47.000 line:0
When we haul them back we find lots of little, baby lobsters.

11
00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:52.000 line:0
We measure all the baby lobsters we find, then we re-release them.

12
00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:58.000 line:0
That data provides us with very valuable information so that we can get abundance estimates

13
00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:03.000 line:0
so that we know what's coming down the pipeline for the fishery five to eight years in advance.

14
00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:10.000 line:0
It’s very important to have a sustainable future for our fishery and this is a big part of it right here,

15
00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:15.000 line:0
and we're proud to work with Red Lobster on this important research.
