Red Lobster presents, Seafood with Standards, Gear Marking

2
00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:08.200 line:0
My name is Curt Brown, I'm a Lobsterman and a marine biologist at Ready Seafood up here in Maine

3
00:00:08.400 --> 00:00:14.000 line:0
and we're proud to supply Red Lobster with nothing but sustainable lobster.

5
00:00:15.200 --> 00:00:18.500 line:0
Lobstering here is Maine is about so much more than just catching lobsters.

00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:26.300 line:1
It's about protecting all the marine life we have around us, and we do that in a number of different ways

5
00:00:26.500 --> 00:00:28.300 line:0
starting with our marker buoys.

6
00:00:28.500 --> 00:00:36.000 line:0
Everybody has their own colours. My buoy colours are brown and green, and I decided on those colours when I was a kid

7
00:00:36.500 --> 00:00:40.000 line:0
because those were the two paint colours in my parents garage.

8
00:00:40.500 --> 00:00:47.200 line:0
Below the buoy we have what's called a 'weak link', this weak link right here is designed to breakaway

9
00:00:47.700 --> 00:00:51.000 line:0
should any marine life get tangled in our end-lines.

10
00:00:51.500 --> 00:00:57.000 line:0
Beyond that we have a purple marker rope, and another another purple gear marking right at the trap.

11
00:00:57.500 --> 00:01:05.000 line:0
This purple rope here signifies that this line is from Maine, should the trap ever get lost.

12
00:01:05.500 --> 00:01:12.000 line:0
The only way you can legally harvest the lobster in Maine is with traps, so let's haul this one up I'll show you

13
00:01:12.500 --> 00:01:15.500 line:0
the rest of what we do to protect marine life here in Maine.

14
00:01:16.500 --> 00:01:20.000 line:0
Every single trap in Maine is required to to have a trap tag.

15
00:01:20.500 --> 00:01:27.000 line:0
This ensures that nobody fishes over the legal limit, so that there's never too much gear in the water.

16
00:01:27.500 --> 00:01:32.000 line:0
On the trap itself we have what's called an escape vent, this vent right here is essentially

17
00:01:32.500 --> 00:01:39.500 line:0
a hole in the trap that allows small lobsters and any other marine life that gets into the trap to get back out.

18
00:01:40.500 --> 00:01:48.000 line:0
The state of Maine is also working on ropeless gear technology so that someday we might be able to fish these traps with no rope at all.

19
00:01:48.500 --> 00:01:54.000 line:0
There has not been a documented Right Whale entanglement with Maine Lobster gear in over 15 years

20
00:01:54.500 --> 00:01:58.000 line:0
and that is the result of all that you see right here.

20
00:01:58.500 --> 00:02:03.000 line:0
Thank you Red Lobster, that's something that we're very, very proud of.
